I have seen the show, but disregard that; WHY can’t I respond to this without seeing the show? This response has nothing to do with Wong’s show, and everything to do with Matt’s review, which is almost impossible to justify regardless of how “bad” a night was.

So, why can’t I respond to a review like this? Surely you’re not saying that, while comics must be willing to accept criticism of their art (given that it’s public), reviewers are beyond reproach and never to be responded to?

Unfortunately the review has been edited; I took pretty much all of his phrasing and simply changed some of the nouns to fit “review” instead of “show”. The worst part is that I wasn’t much more nasty than he was originally. At least he didn’t tell Wong to go fuck herself.

To be fair, all I do is write or perform angry. It may not be for everyone, but it got my point across, and it did result in getting the piece changed (Matt contacted me on Twitter to tell me as much). This wasn’t supposed to be funny, this was purely reactionary. It also wasn’t meant to advertise my comedy, just me as a person and my views on things.
You’re also entitled to your view on my strong suits, but I wouldn’t judge my work after one piece. You might sound like a bit of a twat, given what we’re talking about.
Lastly, don’t tell me where there is or isn’t art. Go fuck yourself xox

Hey Reviewer – I have written something like 300 reviews in my career as a writer, and none of them were ever as cruel as the original version of the Jen Wong review. The review has been edited twice since this response – originally it was a letter to Jennifer and included a link to Beyond Blue, a depression/suicide assistance service. It was by far the most offensive review I’ve seen.

Hey Nick – to defend Mitch, the original review has now been edited several times. Mitch’s piece used direct phrasing taken from the original piece, and again – the original piece was written as a letter to Jennifer and this was a direct response to that. I’ve left this up as many comedians responded positively to this piece.

Comedians are indeed presenting themselves for total scrutiny and a harsh review is acceptable. Crikey publishing a link to Beyond Blue – directed at the subject of the review – is completely unacceptable.

The most recent Australian data (ABS, Causes of Death, 2009) reports deaths due to suicide at 2,132. That equates to 6 deaths by suicide a day, or one every four hours

Taunting an artist with links to a depression help service is not only making a mockery out of a foundation that saves lives, but is mere steps away from suggesting an artist should be so depressed at their performance they should consider killing themselves.

Blame should not only be placed on the author of this article, but more so, Crikey should be reprimanded for allowing such material to be published.

Disgusting that the article has been completely edited and the Beyond Blue link removed, without a word of apology, or acknowledgment that edits were deemed necessary.

Mitch, really, don’t drive angry – it doesn’t
make for entertaining reading. You forgot to be funny here, or to
specifically defend any of the reviewer’s criticisms of the show, or to
talk about the show, or Jennifer and why we should disregard the review
and go see her. Just hurling abuse and insults isn’t much use, tell me
why Jennifer is great, not how much you hate the reviewer. More troll
than lol.

Wow…talk about bullying. I don’t think you can respond to a review like this when you haven’t even seen the show. Reviewers are supposed to discuss the show and if it was not a good one then they are supposed to say that. Calling someone a wanker and telling them go fuck themselves…that’s intelligent piece of writing.
Comedians are putting themselves out there, absolutely, and it’s hard work to do it but you have to be able to take the criticism – not every show is gonna be bad but as reviewers we can only say what we saw on the night.
